A tradition of Excellence

Whitewater

For athletes that have run more than 300 (freshmen), 325 (sophomores) or 350 (upperclassmen) miles over the summer and regularly attended captains' practices, we will embark on the annual training trip to Whitewater state park at the start of the season. This camp is by invite-only based on mileage and behavior over the summer. All other athletes will meet at Mounds View as usual for daily practice.

Alumni

Background

The alumni race pits current students vs. prior graduates that ran for the Mounds View track and cross country programs. The course is a 2 mile race consisting of two 1 mile loops around Como Park. Team scores, like all cross country meets, are based on the top-5 finishers for each team and the team with the lowest total score wins. Afterward, the boys teams play softball for additional bragging rights.

Schedule

  • 9:00 AM - Race start
  • 10:00 AM (or so) - Awards

Course Description

Every race is 2 miles long and consists of two nearly identical laps. There are chain-link fences approximately 400 meters into the race that create a funnel, so the typical strategy is to go out fairly hard for the first 400m (not sprinting, just faster than race pace) to bypass the slowdown at this funnel. There is some pavement on the initial part of the pond trail, but most of the portions with pavement have grass along one or both sides for runners wearing spikes. Short spikes are encouraged.

Course Description

The Anoka high school course is the second fastest course of the year despite medium length grass (not a golf course) and mild downhill and uphill segments throughout. The 5 kilometer course is comprised of two 2.5 kilometer loops; hence, the start and finish of the race are in nearly identical locations. Approximately 150-200 meters before the finish there is an S-curve that limits view of the finish line. Racers will only be able to see the finish line 100 meters before the finish of the race.

All spectators will have to ride the shuttle buses unless they have a room reserved at Arrowwood. Shuttle buses will run from 8:30AM-3:00PM.

    Course Description

The Alexandria course is 5,000m for varsity and JV athletes and 3,200m for freshmen. Freshmen do a single lap on the course whereas varsity and JV runners do two laps. Each lap includes gentle rolling hills before heading towards the woods on the back of the course. There is a steep decline (upper right corner of course map) leading to a long straightaway towards the finish. The course is a net downhill because the start location is well above the finish location. The morning races also tend to be pretty cool but the varsity races tend to be quite nice.

Location

Tanner's Brook Golf Course

Parking

There will be limited private car parking in the golf course parking lot, especially until all buses are parked and unloaded. The should be some parking attendants in the parking lot starting at 2PM to direct parking. Private cars will need to park along local road 190th Street or side roads off Hwy 61.

Course Description

The SEC course has historically been very flat. For many years it was at Falcon Ridge Golf Course in Stacy, MN, but in 2015 the course changed to the equally flat Tanner's Brook Golf Course in Forest Lake. However, it tends to be soggy footing so that mitigates the speed of an otherwise fast course. The course has markers at each kilometer (1-5 km), the halfway point (2.5 km) and the 1600m and 3200m marks.

History

The MSHSL used to host a JV meet alongside the section 5AA/5AAA meet, but stopped doing so after Covid. Technically, this race is separate from the Section 5AAA mee; although many of the same schools attend, it also includes schools in other sections like White Bear Lake. Parking, course map, etc. are all the same as the Section 5AAA meet information above.
